How to use Amsterdam public transport: the STRIPPENKAART

For local transport in Amsterdam, be it bus, tram or metro (subway), there is a universal kind of ticket, called the strippenkaart. Upon your arrival, you will find a 15-strip strippenkaart in your registration package. A journey from A to B takes N `zones', N depending on the distance between A and B. Before entering the metro, you have to stamp the next $N+1$ strips on your ticket at the stamping machines on the platforms. When going by bus or tram, tell the bus driver or conductor how many zones you need and (s)he will stamp your ticket. The journey from the CASA hotel to the conference venue is one zone, so you have to use 2 strips. When buying a strippenkaart at the train ticket offices at the airport, in order to get to the CASA hotel, ask for a 1-zone ticket since you will only need to travel for one zone. At the CASA hotel, a 15-strip ticket for further travel is waiting for you in your registration package.

How to get to Amsterdam

From Belgium, parts of Germany and parts of France including Paris, it is advisable to go by train rather than airplane. All international trains stop at Amsterdam Central Station.

How to get to the CASA 400 hotel from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport/Amsterdam Central Station

Warning: unfortunately, pickpockets are quite active at the airport, at train stations, metro stations and in trains, metros and trams. Be VERY careful of your belongings!

The CASA 400 hotel is located close to the Amsterdam Amstel train station. In order to get there (except if you go by taxi), you first need to go by train and then by metro. For the part of your journey handled by train, you have to buy a train ticket; these can be bought at the ticket offices of the train stations. For the part of your journey handled by metro, you need a strippenkaart (1 zone, 2 strips, whichever route you follow). These can also be bought at the ticket offices of the train stations. From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, you can either

How to get to the CASA 400 hotel from Amsterdam Amstel Station

At the train station, go to the main hallway (where the ticket offices are) and take the exit with the taxi sign (this exit is called `Uitgang Noord' (=Exit North)). Outside, to your right you will see a big office building `PriceWaterhouseCoopers'. Cross the traffic lights and walk towards this building. On the left from the building entrance you will see stairs leading down to a tunnel for pedestrians (there is actually a sign with 'Casa 400' and a pedestrian on it at the stairs). Take the stairs and cross the tunnel. Do not follow the other sign for Casa 400 (without the pedestrian) since it is meant for cars only. When exiting the tunnel, head to the right. You are now in `James Watt Straat'. The second big building on your right is the CASA 400 hotel.

How to get to the Trippenhuis  (conference venue) from Amsterdam Schiphol airport/from Amsterdam Central station/from Amsterdam Amstel Train Station/from the CASA 400 hotel

Here is a map of the Amsterdam city center. The Trippenhuis lies in square 4D and is called `Ak. v. Wet.' on this map.

An attractive (faster!) alternative is to do what many Dutch would do and rent a bike for a few days (this can be done at the Amstel train station) and bike from the CASA 400 hotel to the conference venue. It is a beautiful route along the Amstel river which takes about 15 minutes.

Scenery near the Trippenhuis, from left to right: Kloveniersburgwal (where the Trippenhuis is located) in winter, the `Waag', the Zuiderkerk (around the corner) and the Trippenhuis itself.
